Housing

The London Jewish Forum has taken the lead in partnership with the community in Stamford Hill in working senior officers in City Hall and other authorities in London to ensure future housing provision for London’s strictly orthodox community.

The community is doubling in size every 16-18 years and there is already evidence of overcrowding in the 20,000 strong community.

Several new housing sites are being considered in north London and the Thames Gateway. The community is looking for the development of new neighbourhoods which are designed for mixed populations, from different ethnic and religious groups, but peppered within them housing stock appropriate for larger families along with some kosher facilities.

AIHA, LJF and First Base have formed a group called London Clusters that will look into future housing provision for Stamford Hill’s strictly orthodox Jewish Community.

Mayor Boris Johnson has been supportive of the work of London Jewish Forum writing:

“The London Jewish Forum has taken an important lead in discussions with GLA officers to come up with constructive solutions to the ongoing problems, and we will continue to look at ways in which we can ensure that the Charedi community will never need to consider leaving our city.”
